Denver's Dia de los Muertos observances usually mean building a personal altar. MCA Denver's version flips that: on November 1, the museum turns a gallery over to visitors building one shared memorial sculpture together, a life-sized calavera piñata that stands in for the whole room's dead rather than any single family's.

Visual artist Cipriano Ortega leads the piñata construction and decoration, while poet and wellness guide Nancy Levenson walks participants through writing short memory poems for people they've lost. Those poems go inside the piñata before it's finished, so the finished object literally carries what each visitor brought to it.
