Hazel Miller has been a fixture of the Colorado music scene for decades, and her Christmas show is built on the same formula that made her a local icon: familiar holiday songs reworked through a gospel and jazz lens rather than played straight. The Rocky Mountain News once called her "a force of nature," and the two sets at Arvada Center's intimate Black Box Theatre give a close-up view of why.
The Collective, the band Miller formed more than twenty years ago, mixes jazz, R&B, blues and soul musicians who have played together long enough to improvise around a holiday songbook rather than just cover it. Each performance, titled Christmas with Soul, runs about 75 minutes.
